The Untamed Birthplace of the Legendary 'Walking Safari'

Travel To Zambia

Zambia is a land of rugged beauty and raw, untouched wilderness, often referred to as Africa’s best-kept secret. Located in the heart of Southern Africa, it is a destination defined by its mighty rivers, vast floodplains, and a deep-rooted commitment to authentic exploration. While the thundering smoke of Victoria Falls draws many to its borders, the true soul of Zambia lies in its remote national parks, where the wildlife is abundant and the human footprint is light.

From the leopard-rich valleys of South Luangwa to the water-based wonders of the Lower Zambezi and the wild expanse of Kafue, Zambia offers a safari experience that feels deeply personal and incredibly wild. Known as the “Home of the Walking Safari”, it invites travellers to step out of the vehicle and connect with the African bush on a visceral level, guided by some of the most highly trained experts on the continent.

Popular Locations

SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK

Often described as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, South Luangwa is the jewel of Zambia’s eastern region. It is famously known as the "Valley of the Leopard" due to the high concentration of these elusive cats, which are frequently spotted on night drives. The park is defined by the winding Luangwa River and its fertile lagoons, attracting massive herds of elephants and hippos. As the birthplace of the walking safari, South Luangwa offers a raw, unfiltered connection to the bush that few other places on earth can match.

LOWER ZAMBEZI NATIONAL PARK

Situated directly across from Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools, the Lower Zambezi National Park is a breathtaking sanctuary where the rugged escarpment meets the mighty Zambezi River. It is a premier destination for water-based safaris, offering travelers the chance to drift past herds of "island-hopping" elephants and sunbathing crocodiles in a canoe. The park’s unique landscape of winterthorn forests and open floodplains creates a serene, picturesque backdrop for seeing lions, buffalo, and a spectacular array of birdlife in a setting that feels entirely your own

LIVINGSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Livingstone is the historic gateway to the legendary Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya or "The Smoke That Thunders." While the waterfall is the undisputed star of the show, the surrounding national park offers a unique, intimate safari experience where you can track rare white rhinos on foot. Combining colonial charm with world-class adventure, Livingstone serves as Zambia’s vibrant hub for everything from sunset river cruises on the upper Zambezi to white-water rafting and microlight flights over the world’s largest curtain of falling water.

Travel Information

Please read the details below carefully to understand what you need to know and do.

Health and Safety
  • Health Precautions: Ensure your routine vaccinations (MMR, Polio, Flu) are up to date. Malaria is prevalent throughout Zambia; it is strongly recommended to take preventive medication (prophylaxis) and use insect repellent, especially during evening hours. A Yellow Fever certificate is required if you are arriving from a country where the disease is endemic.
  • Safety in the Wild: Zambia is the home of the walking safari. Always follow your professional guide’s instructions strictly. On river safaris in the Lower Zambezi, remain seated in canoes and keep a safe distance from hippos and crocodiles.
  • General Security: Zambia is considered one of Africa’s most stable and peaceful countries. However, exercise standard precautions in busy areas like Lusaka or Livingstone—avoid displaying expensive jewelry or large amounts of cash.
  • Photography: It is illegal to take photos of military buildings, government institutions, or border posts. Always ask permission before photographing local people.

Currency and Payments: The official currency is the Zambian Kwacha (ZMW). While credit cards are accepted in major lodges and hotels, Zambia is largely a cash economy. US Dollars (printed after 2006) are widely used for tipping and larger purchases.

Tipping Etiquette: Tipping is customary. For safari guides, $10–$15 per person per day is standard. In restaurants, a 10% tip is appreciated if a service charge hasn’t been added.

Language: English is the official language and is widely spoken in all tourist hubs and lodges.

Local Vibe: Zambians are exceptionally polite. It is customary to greet someone and ask how they are before asking for directions or assistance.

  • Zambia has recently waived visa requirements for many nationalities to boost tourism.

    • Visa-Exempt: Citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and most EU countries no longer require a visa for tourist stays up to 90 days.
    • KAZA Univisa: If you plan to cross between Zambia and Zimbabwe (at Victoria Falls), ask for the KAZA Univisa ($50), which allows unlimited travel between the two countries for 30 days
