Zanzibar

The Exotic Spice Island of Turquoise Waters and Timeless Stone

Most Visited

Travel To Zanzibar

Zanzibar is an archipelago that feels like a world apart, where the scent of cloves and cinnamon hangs heavy in the salt air. Floating just off the coast of Tanzania, this “Spice Island” is a tapestry of white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and a history that stretches back through centuries of Arab, Indian, and African trade. It is a destination where time slows down to the rhythm of the tides and the gentle creak of traditional wooden dhows sailing across the horizon.

From the labyrinthine, sun-drenched alleys of Stone Town to the exclusive, crystal-clear lagoons of Mnemba Atoll, Zanzibar offers a sensory escape like no other. Whether you are swimming with sea turtles in the north or exploring the lush, fertile interior where exotic fruits thrive, the island promises a blend of barefoot luxury and deep cultural soul that stays with you long after the sand has been washed away

Popular Locations

STONE TOWN (MJI MKUU)

The soul of the island, Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a living museum of Swahili culture. Its narrow, winding streets are a maze of history, leading travellers past bustling markets, historic mosques, and the poignant site of the Old Slave Market. A visit here is incomplete without exploring the architectural highlights of the Sultan’s Palace or grabbing a fresh ginger tea at a local café while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of this ancient port city.

NUNGWI
COAST

Located on the northern tip of the island, Nungwi is famous for its lively energy and stunning turquoise beaches that remain swimmable even during low tide. It is a place of natural wonder, home to the Baraka Natural Aquarium, where you can swim alongside rescued sea turtles. The village is also the "dhow-building capital" of the island, where you can watch local craftsmen use centuries-old techniques to hand-build the iconic ships that define the Zanzibari coastline.

Changuu
Island

For those seeking the "postcard-perfect" Zanzibar experience, the offshore islands are the primary draw. Changuu Island (Prison Island) offers a fascinating encounter with giant Aldabra tortoises—some over 150 years old—amidst ruins of the island’s colonial past. Further north, the private Mnemba Atoll serves as a premier marine sanctuary, celebrated globally for its elite snorkelling and the frequent sightings of playful bottlenose dolphins in its protected reefs.

Travel Information

Please read the details below carefully to understand what you need to know and do.

Health and Safety
  • Health Precautions: While the risk of Malaria is lower on the island than on the mainland, precautions are still advised. Drink only bottled or filtered water. Note that as of late 2024/2025, Zanzibar requires all visitors to purchase mandatory local travel insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, even if you have your own.
  • Wildlife & Marine Safety: Do not touch or collect coral or shells from marine parks. When swimming with turtles or dolphins, maintain a respectful distance to support conservation efforts.
  • Cultural Respect: Zanzibar is a conservative Muslim society. Outside of beach resorts, both men and women should dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), especially in Stone Town. Public displays of affection are discouraged.

Currency: The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency. US Dollars are widely accepted for tours and hotels, but ensure bills are crisp and printed after 2006. ATMs are available in Stone Town but are rare in remote beach areas.

Language: Swahili is the national language, but English is widely spoken in the tourism industry. Learning basic greetings like “Jambo” (Hello) and “Asante” (Thank you) goes a long way.

Plastic Ban: Tanzania has a strict ban on plastic carrier bags. Avoid packing them in your luggage, as they may be confiscated at the airport

  • Standard Tourist Visa: Most travelers (USA, UK, EU, Australia) require a visa. This can be obtained online (E-visa) or on arrival at the airport for $50 (standard) or $100 (for US citizens due to reciprocity).
  • Passport Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date and have at least one blank page.
